Southern Roots | Bayou Soul
Big Al and the Heavyweights originally formed in 1996 as the Unknown Blues Band, with founding members Al Lauro, Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule), and pianist Rick Gergen (Sweethearts of the Rodeo). Of course, Warren is no longer in the band but Big Al has formed a solid array of musicians that features guitarist vocalist extraordinaire Marcel Anton, Dave Mendez from New Orleans, and harp player, vocalist from Detroit Dangerous Dale Robinson.
Blues Power is the eighth album from the South Louisiana roots veterans Big Al and the Heavyweights, delivering a fiery mix of modern blues, funk, bayou soul, zydeco flavor, and high‑energy musicianship. Released via the VizzTone Label Group, the album marks a new chapter for the band with revitalized energy and a return to their original four‑piece format after the passing of longtime member Wayne Lohr. The record celebrates the group’s signature Gulf Coast blues style while pushing forward with fresh compositions, rich grooves, and standout performances from longtime vocalist/guitarist Marcel Anton, bandleader/drummer Big Al Lauro, harmonica ace Dale Robertson, and bassist Dave Mendez.
Big Al and the Heavyweights’ live performances are family oriented, energetic and most of all fun. This is a show you don’t want to miss!
After years of non-stop recording and touring, we are thrilled to announce that Vizztone Label Group recording artists, Big Al and The Heavyweights, were inducted into The Alabama Blues Music Hall of Fame in Birmingham on April 30, 2023. This is a truly incredible achievement, and we cannot express how honored and grateful we are to be recognized for our dedication to spreading the positive power of music. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Roger Stephenson, James Newton of The Alabama Blues Music Hall of Fame, The Magic City Blues Society, and our fans all over, especially in BAMA. As the great Louis Armstrong once said in his iconic song, “The stars fell on Alabama.” We truly appreciate your continuing love and support, and we look forward to sharing our future musical endeavors with all of you!
